According to a survey by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC), one in ten EU workers are planning on leaving the UK – and their jobs – following June’s Brexit vote.
During the survey, which involved 800 companies, the BCC found that some EU employees had already resigned because of the referendum.
The BBC commented that this data “illustrate[s] the urgent need for an assurance from the government over the future rights to remain of EU workers currently in the UK”.
Looking at the survey results in more detail:
- 5% of companies responded saying that their EU staff had already resigned
- 40% said that their European employees have openly expressed concerns over their future residency status
- 10% of companies indicated that some of their EU employees had stated an intention to quit
- 60% of companies surveyed believe that residency guarantees for EU workers would positively impact the future of their business
The BCC has said that government must “provide immediate certainty for both businesses and employees on the residence rights of existing EU employees”. They added that “the potential skills lost from existing EU workers leaving the UK would hamper businesses at a time when many are already reporting recruitment difficulties.”
The body also noted that businesses would need clarity from government on hiring from EU countries during the transition period.
A government spokesman said, “The Prime Minister has been clear that she wants to protect the status of EU nationals already living here, and the only circumstances in which that wouldn’t be possible is if British citizens’ rights in European member states were not protected in return.”
Despite the atmosphere among EU citizens living in the UK, there is little reason to panic if you are already living in the country on a valid visa. There is also no cause for worry if you’re applying, or are planning to apply, for a UK visa.
