How to pack your suitcase like a pro

  • Whether you're packing for an overseas holiday or a more permanent move, deciding what to take with you can be overwhelming. Here are a few tips to help you pack your suitcase like a pro.

    Make a list

It sounds obvious, but a list will ensure you work through your things systematically before deciding what to take. There’s no point in taking hiking socks and no shoes, or a smart jacket and nothing to wear it with. On top of that, you’ll likely save yourself spending unnecessary cash on forgotten items when you arrive.

    Fold ‘n roll

Rolled items take up much less space than folded items, so wherever possible, roll items that won’t wrinkle - underwear, T-shirts, jeans, cotton items and knitwear. Stiffer fabrics, including cotton shirts, blazers and smart pants and skirts need to be carefully folded.

Clothes you’ll need first go on top

Whether you’re travelling for a holiday or making a more permanent move, you’ll likely be exhausted when you arrive at your destination. To save yourself from having to rummage through your entire suitcase, pack the items you’ll need first on top.

    You don’t need those shoes

Shoes are perhaps the most inconvenient items to pack, as they’re oddly shaped, heavy and mostly inflexible. Try to limit yourself to three pairs. Wear the bulkiest pair when travelling and pack the other two in your suitcase.

To help maximise space, try packing chargers and small electronic items in each shoe.

    Just ship it

If you just can’t bring yourself to leave certain items at home, it’s almost always cheaper and easier to ship your items in advance. Excess baggage fees are a frustrating way to lose hard-earned cash. Apart from saving money, it also saves you having to drag numerous bags around with you.
