Extend your Tier 1 (General) visa now before 6 April cut-off

by John Dunn | Jan 08, 2015
  • From 6 April 2015, Tier 1 (General) visa holders will no longer be able to extend or switch their Tier 1 visas. This means that if you are currently in the UK on a Tier 1 visa and need an extension, you’ll need to send in your application before 6 April or risk having to leave the UK once your current visa expires.
  • Immigration

    Who qualifies right now?

The Tier 1 (General) extension applies to anyone currently holding a valid Tier 1 (General) visa. The extension is in place to help skilled individuals who want to apply for an additional period of leave to remain in the UK. Eligibility is dependent on assessment via a point system that takes into account your age, qualifications, previous earnings and study experience in the UK.

Among other requirements you must also:

    • Show that you meet the maintenance requirements
    • Score 75 or 100 points, depending on the category you were last granted leave under

What can you do with the Tier 1 visa?

Assuming you qualify for the Tier 1 (General) visa extension, you can use it as a way to extend your stay long enough to apply for indefinite leave to remain (ILR). If your application is successful, you’ll be able to extend your stay for another three years, which is hopefully as much time you need to complete your five-year stay in the UK and apply for ILR.

Once all the applications have been processed, the Home Office will assess what provisions are needed for ILR applications before making adjustments to the Immigration Rules. However, from 6 April 2018, applications for indefinite leave to remain will no longer be accepted in the Tier 1 (General) category.

If you are currently in the UK on a Tier 1 visa and wish to apply for indefinite leave to remain you must submit an application on or before 5 April 2018.

If you’re unsure how this rule change might affect you or would like a hand with your application, get in touch with 1st Contact Visas. We can make sure that you submit your application correctly the first time round to give you the best chance of success. Call 1st Contact Visas on +44 (0) 808 141 1664 or send us an email on immigration@1stcontact.com to start your application process today.
