UKBA introduces ‘language and life in the UK’ test

by 1st Contact | Nov 28, 2013
  • If you’re considering applying for British citizenship or Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR), you’ll now have to demonstrate knowledge of the English language and sit down for a ‘Life in the UK’ test.
  • Immigration

The UKBA’s new English Language Knowledge requirements came into effect on the 28th of October 2013. Unless special circumstances excuse you from the test, you’ll need to demonstrate a B1 rating in both speaking and listening English that meets the standards of the Common European Framework of Reference (CEFR).

    Exemptions

Certain exemptions do exist. If you meet any of the below prerequisites, you won’t need to take the English language test at all:

    • If you have studied in the UK at a degree or higher level
    • If you are from one of the UKBA-listed majority English language-speaking countries: Antigua and Barbuda, Australia, Barbados, Canada, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, The Bahamas, New Zealand, St Kitts and Nevis Belize, St Lucia, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, and the United States of America
    • If you have previously written a UKBA-recognised English language test and passed at B1 level or higher.
