UK Tier 1 visa extension deadline looming

by John Dunn | Jun 19, 2014
  • If you're in the UK on a Tier 1 (General) visa, you'll need to apply for an extension as soon as possible.

The deadline for extending your Tier 1 (General) visa is 5 April 2015. This may sound like a long time in the future, but in reality it’s only around 270 days away, and you probably don’t need any reminding of how quickly time can come and go.

On a Tier 1 (General) visa, you can extend for three years, provided you applied for your visa any time after 6 April 2010.

If you applied before 6 April 2010, you can extend it for two years. If you applied as a writer, composer or artist, or a self-employed lawyer, you can also extend it for two years.

Indefinite leave to remain (ILR) deadline

Those wanting to apply for ILR must submit an application on or before April 2018, after which such applications will no longer be accepted in the Tier 1 (General) category.

In the event that you don’t qualify for indefinite leave to remain, you may have the option of switching to a Tier 2 sponsorship visa if you’ve been offered a skilled job or can fill a “shortage occupation” position in the UK.
