UK is leader in IT contractors

by Kobus Van den Bergh | Mar 09, 2016
  • With a booming economy and increased business opportunities, UK businesses are making extensive use of IT contractors. A recent survey shows that, with usage at 76%, these numbers are significantly higher than the international average.
  • UK leader in IT contractors

A new study, from IT resourcing specialist Experis, surveyed executives in ten countries who were responsible for hiring IT employees. The results confirmed that UK businesses are leading the trend and taking advantage of the number of IT contractors in the country.

Proportionally, there are more contractors in the UK than in many of the world’s leading economies.

While the UK is at the forefront of the contracting market, there are a few countries that are yet to take full advantage of this trend. Germany, for one, has one of the lowest proportions of contractor usage with few expectations of an increase. Although figures from the US and Australia are also quite low, these countries expect demand to grow.

The greatest growth in future use of IT contractors is expected to come from BRICs countries, specifically: India, Brazil and China.

While most companies have responded positively to the use of contractors, there are still companies that hesitate. Businesses’ main concerns arise as a result of:

    • The perception that it will take too long to train outsourced employees
    • Confidentiality or privacy concerns

Contractors provide key strategic skills, allowing companies to fill the gaps in their workforce, without long-term financial commitments.

With employment in the UK currently at its highest recorded level, employing contractors becomes an attractive option for companies who aren’t able to take on more permanent staff, but need extra capacity to respond to market growth.
