No new UK visa deal for Australians

by Sam Hopwood | Nov 10, 2016
  • UK Home Secretary, Amber Rudd has put an end to speculation, stating that there will be no special visa deal for Australians wanting to come to the UK after Brexit.

This announcement comes just weeks after Foreign Secretary, Boris Johnson, spoke about negotiating a visa system that would simplify migration between the UK and Australia.

After voting to leave the EU earlier this year, there were rumours the UK would enter into a new free-movement agreement with Australia. This was met with much public support, evidenced by an online petition that attracted more than 160,000 signatures.

These hopes were dashed when Rudd stated that there were no plans to increase immigration from Australia.

Believing that the current scheme with Australia works well – particularly referring to access for younger people wanting to come to the UK – Rudd says there is no need for the system to change.

These statements came after a meeting between Rudd and Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Julie Bishop. The conference aimed to tackle the visa hurdles restricting Australian’s ability to work in the UK.

The announcement seems to show that Prime Minister May has prioritised migration ahead of trade negotiations with the EU.
