The UK government is now allowing visa-free travel to the UK for holders of United Arab Emirates passports. As of 1 January 2014, Oman, Qatar and United Arab Emirates passport holders are able to enter the UK for six months if they have an electronic visa waiver.
Emiratis travelling from the UAE for business or pleasure can spend up to six months in the UK without a visa. Visitors from UAE, Oman, Qatar and Kuwait will only need to fill in an online visa waiver application within 48 hours of their flight. They will then receive a visa waiver document to print out and take along to the airport.
The visa waiver was announced by David Cameron at the Lord Mayor of London’s annual banquet last year. The British Embassy’s new electronic visa waiver (EVW) website is currently up and running, and at the time of writing, around 400 applications have already been processed. The new scheme replaces the previous time-consuming system, which required biometric information along with an appointment at a visa application centre.
Emiratis simply need to create an account on the website and provide the following information in either English or Arabic:
- Full name
- date of birth
- passport number
- reason for travel
- port of departure
- departure date and time
- Flight number
- date and time of arrival
- port of arrival
- intended date of departure.
The document supplied by the system is only valid for a single entry on the specified dates. Those wishing to stay in the UK for longer than six months will still need to apply for a visa as before, and will not be able to use the new EVW system.
