With more than 36 000 people completing the race in 2012, the London Marathon is now officially the world’s largest marathon, and one of only six world marathons with a $1 million prize purse. It’s a fast competitive race for the serious athletes, while amateurs have the opportunity to dress up for fun or run to raise funds for charity.

THE COURSE

The course spans a distance of 42.195 kilometres, with three starting points, joining up in Woolwich.

BLUE Starting Point – Shooter’s Hill Road

• The Elite Women’s Race starts at 9.00am

• The Wheelchair Race starts at 9.20am

• The Elite Men’s and the Athletics Championship Races start at 9.45am

RED Starting Point – Southern Greenwich Park on Charlton Way

• General mass start is at 9.45am.

GREEN Starting Point – St John’s Park

• Celebrity runners

ROAD CLOSURES

Expect road closures, with various course-crossing points for residents.

Road closures from 7am around the following areas:

• Blackheath

• Woolwich

• Greenwich

• Westminster

Road closures from 8am around the following areas:

• Deptford

• Rotherhithe

• Tower Hamlets

• Docklands

• The City

PUBLIC TRANSPORT

Because of all the road closures, the best way to get around is by using the London Underground, South Eastern and Docklands Light Railway (DLR), with extra services for the day.

LIVE COVERAGE

The BBC will provide full coverage of the Virgin London Marathon from 8:30am on BBC One, BBC One HD and Radio 5 live, as well as online.

VIEWING POINTS

The Greenwich Foot Tunnel will be open with one way flow (south to north) between 10.30am and 12.30pm.
