Moving from Australia to London – a first-hand account

by 1st Contact | Oct 14, 2015
  • While colourful brochures and polished websites are a helpful starting point when thinking about moving overseas, few things are as valuable as first-hand advice from someone who has already been through the process. Celestè Sullivan, who recently moved from Melbourne to London, shares a few helpful tips as well as the highlights of her journey so far.

Celestè used 1st Contact’s Kickstart package and has chosen to live in Wapping, East London. Says Celestè: “I’m loving London and found settling in easy – it feels like home already. With the help of 1st Contact, the move was stress free, making it easier for me to adjust to living in a new country.”

Celestè first travelled to the UK and Europe when she was 21 and fell in love with the multi-cultural city instantly. She returned to Australia and joined a large hotel group. Seven years later she was offered an opportunity to return to the city she loved.

A few of Celestè’s favourite London activities include the Alternative London Walking Tour and visiting the Borough Food Market on a Saturday morning. For anyone new to the city, she recommends having a drink or dinner at the Sushisamba bar in the Heron Building while enjoying breath-taking views of the city.

Finding accommodation in London can be overwhelming – Celestè found the Spare Room App very useful for finding a flat. She warns those looking for a place to stay in the city: “Remember to have enough saved to cover the deposit for your flat, as sometimes landlords ask for 12 weeks up front.”
