4 reasons why IT contractors have it good in the UK

  • Gone are the days when people worked for the same company for 35 years to receive a gold watch or certificate at the end of their careers.

New generations of workers are taking control of their time and lives by working as contractors. We take a look at a few of the reasons why IT contractors love working in the UK.

    1. Contracting is the way of the future

As a contractor you have the freedom of deciding your own hours and planning holidays around contracts, you also gain an enormous amount of experience and grow your skill-set much faster than you would as a permanent employee.

    2. Contracting pays

According to research conducted by the Professional Representation Network, the UK’s top contractors earn three times the average UK wage. The average annual earnings of the top 100,000 contractors is around £80,000 per annum, compared to the national average income of £27,000.

    3. IT contracting pays even more

There’s even better news for IT contractors: they are the highest paid contractors in the UK according to  Robert Walters' The 2015 Global Salary Survey. An IT director can take home anywhere between £700 and £1,000 a day, a security specialist between £400 and £650, a business analyst can charge anywhere between £450 and £500, a Java developer £400 to £550, and a Systems Administrator £300 to £400.

    4. A growing industry

Why is IT contracting so well-paid? In simple terms, there is a massive demand for skilled IT contractors. The REC Report in the last quarter of 2014 confirmed that five types of IT contracts were especially in demand: business intelligence, Java, .Net, software and SQL. We’re living in a digital age and IT workers are necessary for almost every aspect of business.
