1st Contact held an intimate ‘Croquet Day’ on 6 September 2012, in which we invited a number of recruitment agencies to join us for an afternoon of networking, Pimms, canapés and, of course, a few games of croquet.
The afternoon kicked off around 16:00, with the current world champion, Reg Bamford, 1st Contact’s CEO, instructing everyone on the rules of ‘golf croquet’ – a variant of croquet which allowed us amateurs to get involved and have fun at our basic skill levels.
With a 2-on-2 format, the guests and staff were paired off against each other for 25-minute games in a round-robin competition. The top two pairs would head into the final. The final play-off between Downunder Tradies and iCobus Limited was an eventful match, with Downunder Tradies taking the top spot.
The winning team was then scheduled to play against Reg Bamford and the 1st Contact FD in an exhibition match – but we were all in for a treat. Former world champion, Nigel Aspinall, was visiting the Roehampton Club, and accepted our invitation to participate in the exhibition match. It was now the current world champ versus the ex-world champ – each paired with a member of the winning Downunder Tradies team!
The exhibition match was an extraordinary game. After some amazing long-distance roquets, shatter shots, jump shots and even Reg’s famous ‘bouncing bomb’, his team took the match. Some of the highlights and action shots can be viewed in our Facebook album.
The final results:
- First place: Downunder Tradies
- Second Place: iCobus
- Best-dressed: Gap Placements
- Runners-up: EXP International Systems Limited, Greenfields Technology and Sable Group.
We’d like to extend our thanks to the Roehampton Croquet Club for hosting us, to Carla Hattingh and her team who organised the event and all our guests, who made the day so memorable. It was a great afternoon out, enjoyed by all.
