Best value holiday destinations for your Pounds

If you’ve been bitten by the travel bug and are looking to book your next getaway, it’s always best to start planning sooner rather than later. If you’re travelling from the UK, you’ll be happy to know that the strong Pound means that many destinations are getting cheaper to visit.

If you’re keen to get the most out of your holiday budget, we recommend choosing a country with a weak exchange rate against the Pound. You’ll get far more for your money at these destinations.

Those with their eye on a trip to the US may want to reconsider. The strong Dollar makes trips to the US and Caribbean relatively more expensive. This is especially true at resorts, where prices have increased by about 9% since last year. However, this doesn’t mean that all long-haul trips are out of the question. If you’re looking to travel further afield, Cape Town, Bali and Turkey all offer great value for your GBP.

According to the UK Post Office’s Holiday Costs Barometer, the top 10 best value holiday destinations if you’re looking to save a few quid are:

  1. Portugal
  2. Bulgaria
  3. South Africa
  4. Spain
  5. Turkey
  6. Hungary
  7. Czech Republic
  8. Indonesia
  9. Cyprus
  10. Greece

On the other end of the spectrum, the 10 most expensive countries for those traveling with Pounds are:

  1. Dubai
  2. Antigua
  3. Singapore
  4. Barbados
  5. New Zealand
  6. Oman
  7. Jamaica
  8. US
  9. Australia
  10. St Lucia

On the whole, it’s still looking good for those travelling with Pounds. Prices were down in more than half of the 44 cities and resorts surveyed, some by as much as 31%. With a 19% price fall, Portugal’s Algarve is the closest budget destination for UK tourists, while Cape Town offers the best long haul value.
