USA Tops Olympic Visa Card Spending

Visa recently released a report which reveals that a total of £445.3 million was spent by international visitors during the first week of the Olympic Games.

This figure represents purchases from prepaid cards, debit cards and credit cards, and is pretty indicative of overall spending, as Visa is the only credit card accepted at Olympic venues and official shops.

  • Visitors from the USA top the list, having spent a whopping £54.6 million. This figure accounts for 12% of the total international visitor spend.
  • The average spend per transaction is £57,26.
  • Chinese visitors had the highest spend per transaction, at an average of £203,24.
  • Tourists from the UAE spent an average of £181.24.
  • Hong Kong card-holders’ average transaction was for £134.89.
  • Retail accounted for 27% of spending.
  • Services account for 19.2%.
  • Entertainment accounted for 13.7% and includes movie tickets, shows and other forms of entertainment.
  • Figures show a 7.3% increase in sales of food and drink in the UK.
  • Sporting goods shops showed an increase of 6.2%.
