According to a BBC World Service Country Rating Poll, the UK has risen in popularity since last year and is now considered the 2nd most popular country in the world, after Germany.
29 000 people from 27 countries were ask to rate the global influence of 16 major nations and the European Union between December 2010 and February 2011. The UK’s positive rating is 58%, 5% up from 2010, while its negative rating decreased by 2%, from 19%. Of the 27 countries polled, 24 had overall positive views of the UK and only tow – Pakistan and Mexico, gave an overall negative rating of the UK. Countries which seem to have the most positive views of the UK were the USA, Canada and Australia.
Brazil recorded the largest jump in popularity while South Africa, host of the 2010 World Cup, posted the second biggest rise.
Germany once again revealed itself as the most popular country, while the US increased in popularity for the fourth year in a row.
Other interesting findings included a significant drop in positive feelings of the Chinese towards Russia during the past year, with negative views soaring by 21 points to 40%.
The USA’s perception of France improved significantly this year and is at its highest point since the poll was first introduced in 2005.
